Zambia's Waterfall Circuit
Beyond Victoria Falls β discover Zambia's hidden waterfalls from Kalambo to Kundalila
Overview
Most visitors to Zambia know Victoria Falls, but the country is home to dozens of spectacular waterfalls scattered across its northern and western regions. From Kalambo Falls β one of Africa's highest single-drop waterfalls β to the broad crescent of Ngonye Falls on the Zambezi, these hidden gems offer stunning scenery without the crowds.
The βWaterfall Circuitβ through Northern Province is an emerging road trip route that connects several major falls, passing through scenic countryside, traditional villages, and some of Zambia's most important archaeological sites. This is frontier tourism at its best β you may have these waterfalls entirely to yourself.
The Waterfalls
Kalambo Falls
221m dropNorthern Province, Zambia-Tanzania border
One of Africa's highest single-drop waterfalls and the continent's second-highest uninterrupted fall. The gorge below contains archaeological evidence of continuous human occupation for over 250,000 years β one of the most important Stone Age sites in Africa. On UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.
Lumangwe Falls
30-40m high, 160m wideNorthern Province, Kalungwishi River
Often called Zambia's 'mini Victoria Falls' due to its broad, horseshoe shape. The mist and spray create a mystical atmosphere. Local legend speaks of a great serpent spirit β Lumangwe β living in the falls. Swimming possible in the dry season at the base.
Chishimba Falls
Three cascading fallsNear Kasama, Northern Province
A series of three waterfalls β Mutumuna, Kaela, and Chishimba β on the Luombe River. The main fall drops into a misty gorge considered sacred by the local Bemba people. A small hydroelectric station operates alongside the falls. The easiest of the northern waterfalls to reach.
Kundalila Falls
70m dropCentral Province, near Serenje
"Crying Dove" in the Bemba language. A crystal-clear stream tumbles 70m into a pool surrounded by wild flowers and ferns. Safe swimming in the natural pool at the base. From the top, panoramic views across the Luangwa Valley. One of Zambia's most beautiful falls.
Ngonye Falls
10-25m high, broad crescentWestern Province, Zambezi River near Sioma
A wide, dramatic waterfall on the Zambezi River forming a broad crescent with rocky outcrops and islands. Less famous than Victoria Falls but impressive in its own right. The surrounding area is home to the Lozi people and connects to the Kuomboka ceremony route.
