South Luangwa
Birthplace of the walking safari and the leopard capital of Africa β one of the continent's greatest wildlife sanctuaries
Overview
South Luangwa National Park covers 9,050 kmΒ² of the Luangwa Valley in eastern Zambia and is widely regarded as one of Africa's finest wildlife destinations. The park is famous for its extraordinary concentration of wildlife along the meandering Luangwa River β one of the last unspoiled major river systems in Africa.
Pioneered by the legendary conservationist Norman Carr in the 1950s, South Luangwa is the birthplace of the walking safari β an intimate way to experience the African bush on foot with expert armed guides. The park holds the highest density of leopards in Africa, making sightings almost guaranteed on night drives.
With over 60 mammal species and 400+ bird species, the park offers world-class game viewing year-round. The dry season (May-October) concentrates animals along the river, creating some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing in all of Africa.
