South Luangwa

Birthplace of the walking safari and the leopard capital of Africa β€” one of the continent's greatest wildlife sanctuaries

Overview

South Luangwa National Park covers 9,050 kmΒ² of the Luangwa Valley in eastern Zambia and is widely regarded as one of Africa's finest wildlife destinations. The park is famous for its extraordinary concentration of wildlife along the meandering Luangwa River β€” one of the last unspoiled major river systems in Africa.

Pioneered by the legendary conservationist Norman Carr in the 1950s, South Luangwa is the birthplace of the walking safari β€” an intimate way to experience the African bush on foot with expert armed guides. The park holds the highest density of leopards in Africa, making sightings almost guaranteed on night drives.

With over 60 mammal species and 400+ bird species, the park offers world-class game viewing year-round. The dry season (May-October) concentrates animals along the river, creating some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing in all of Africa.

Best Time to Visit

Peak Dry Season (Aug-Oct)

The ultimate wildlife viewing. Animals concentrate around the shrinking Luangwa River. Huge herds of buffalo, elephant, and hippo. Leopard sightings are almost daily. Hot days, cool nights.

Best for: Prime game viewing

Early Dry Season (May-Jul)

Excellent game viewing as the bush dries out. Comfortable temperatures. Walking safaris at their best. Many camps reopen after the rains. Fewer visitors than peak season.

Best for: Walking safaris

Emerald Season (Nov-Apr)

Lush green landscapes, dramatic skies, and newborn animals. Over 250 migratory bird species arrive. Lower rates and fewer tourists. Some camps close, but several remain open.

Best for: Birding & photography

Carmine Bee-eater Season (Sep-Nov)

Thousands of carmine bee-eaters nest in the riverbanks β€” one of Africa's most spectacular bird sights. Combine with excellent late dry season game viewing.

Best for: Birding spectacle
