Kafue National Park on a Budget

Kafue is Zambia's largest national park and the easiest big park to reach from Lusaka. It is also one of the few you can self-drive, which makes it the best value safari in the country.

The short answer

A 3-day budget trip to Kafue from Lusaka costs about $230-320 per person. That assumes you share a self-drive 4x4, camp or stay in a basic chalet in central Kafue, pay the $20-a-day park fee and book one guided game drive. Skipping the Busanga Plains is what keeps it cheap.

Why Is Kafue the Best Park for a Budget Safari?

Most Zambian safaris involve a domestic flight and an all-inclusive lodge, and that is where the money goes. Kafue avoids both. The park starts a few hours west of Lusaka. The tarred M9 road runs right through it, and you can drive yourself between camps and game-viewing areas.

At 22,400 kmΒ², the park is huge and gets few visitors. It has 22 antelope species, lion, leopard, wild dog and over 500 bird species. See the full Kafue National Park guide for regions and wildlife.

How Do You Get to Kafue Cheaply?

Self-drive from Lusaka (best value)

Allow about 3-5 hours from Lusaka to the main gates along the M9, and 5-6+ hours to the northern sector. A 4x4 costs $80-150 a day and splits well between three or four people. Read the Zambia self-drive guide for vehicle hire and road tips.

Bus plus camp pick-up (cheapest)

Buses between Lusaka and Mongu use the M9 through the park. Some camps will collect you from the road if you arrange it in advance. You then rely on the camp for game drives, which costs more per day but saves on vehicle hire if you are travelling solo.

Charter flight (not a budget option)

Light aircraft fly from Lusaka to bush airstrips such as Busanga, Ngoma and Chunga. These are usually part of luxury packages.

Bus routes, camp pick-ups and costs are estimates as of October 2026. Confirm pick-up arrangements with your camp before you travel.

Where Can You Stay in Kafue on a Budget?

Budget beds in Kafue are limited, so book ahead from July to October.

New Kalala Camp

$30 - $60 / night

Basic chalets and camping, and one of the cheapest bases in the park. Good for self-drivers who want a bed rather than a tent.

Puku Pan Safari Lodge

Budget to mid-range

A simple lodge listed among Kafue's budget options. Ask about self-catering or campsite rates.

Lodge campsites

$10 - $20 / person

Several Kafue lodges let self-drivers camp on site and pay for activities or meals separately. Book ahead in the dry season.

Camp prices are estimates as of October 2026. Camps change hands and close for seasons, so confirm each one is open and its current rate before booking.

What Does a 3-Day Budget Kafue Itinerary Look Like?

3 Days in Central Kafue from Lusaka

$230 - $320

Per person, sharing a self-drive 4x4 between four

Day 1
Lusaka to Kafue β€” Leave early with fuel and supplies bought in Lusaka. Drive west on the M9, check in to your camp or campsite, and take a late-afternoon drive along the Kafue River.
Day 2
Game viewing β€” Self-drive in the cool of the morning, rest at camp through the midday heat, then join one guided game drive (about $50). A guide spots far more than you will on your own.
Day 3
Morning drive, then onward β€” One last morning drive, then return to Lusaka or continue south to Livingstone and Victoria Falls.
Cost breakdown: Vehicle and fuel share ~$80-130 | Park fees (3 days) $60 | Accommodation (2 nights) ~$20-60 | Game drive ~$50 | Food (self-catering) ~$20

How Can You Save Money in Kafue?

1

Stay central, not in Busanga

Central Kafue has year-round camps and good game viewing for a fraction of Busanga Plains prices.

2

Travel as a group of three or four

Vehicle hire and fuel are the biggest costs. Split four ways, a self-drive safari becomes very affordable.

3

Fill up and stock up in Lusaka

Fuel and groceries are cheaper and easier to find in town. Bring enough for the trip and carry spare water.

4

Go in May, June or the green season

Rates drop outside the July-October peak. Central and southern Kafue stay open in the rains, although some roads get muddy.

5

Pay for one guided drive, self-drive the rest

One drive with an expert guide shows you where to look. Then use what you learned on your own drives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to visit Kafue National Park?

On a budget, expect roughly $75-105 per person per day if you share a self-drive 4x4, camp or stay in a basic chalet, and add one guided game drive. A 3-day trip from Lusaka works out at about $230-320 per person. The park fee is $20 per person per day for international visitors and $15 for SADC citizens and Zambian residents.

Is Kafue cheaper than South Luangwa?

Usually, yes, for travellers starting in Lusaka. Kafue is a few hours' drive away, so you can skip the flight that most people take to South Luangwa. You can self-drive inside the park, and there are budget camps and campsites. South Luangwa has more budget beds near Mfuwe Gate, but getting there costs more.

Can you visit Kafue National Park without a car?

It is possible but harder. The main Lusaka-Mongu road (M9) runs through the park, so some budget travellers take a bus and arrange a pick-up with their camp. You then rely on the camp's guided game drives. Self-drive with a shared 4x4 gives you far more freedom.

Do I need a 4x4 for Kafue?

Yes, inside the park. The M9 is tarred, but park tracks are sand and gravel and need high clearance. The Busanga Plains in the north need a 4x4 and are only accessible in the dry season.

Is the Busanga Plains worth it on a budget?

The Busanga Plains are Kafue's highlight, but the camps there are $700-1,500 a night and the area is only open from about July to October. On a tight budget, base yourself in central Kafue, which has year-round camps and good game viewing. Then decide whether a Busanga splurge, or the balloon flight, is worth it.

When is the cheapest time to visit Kafue?

The green season (December to April) has the lowest rates, and central and southern Kafue stay open, but Busanga floods and some camps close. May and June are a good compromise: camps are reopening, temperatures are comfortable, and rates are lower than in peak season.
