South Luangwa vs Lower Zambezi National Park
Zambia's two classic safari parks are often named in the same breath, but they feel very different on the ground. Here is how they compare on wildlife, activities, access and cost, and which one suits your trip.
The short answer
Choose South Luangwa National Park for walking safaris, night drives, leopards and better budget options. Choose Lower Zambezi National Park for canoe safaris, fishing and river scenery, closer to Lusaka. If you have a week or more, do both: 3-4 nights in each.

Which Park Has Better Wildlife?
South Luangwa
South Luangwa has one of the highest leopard densities in Africa, and night drives give you a real chance of seeing one. It is also the only place to see Thornicroft's giraffe, which is found nowhere else on Earth. Wild dog, huge hippo pods in the Luangwa River, and 400+ bird species round it out.
From September to November, carmine bee-eaters nest in the riverbanks in their thousands.
Lower Zambezi
The Lower Zambezi is best for elephants, buffalo and hippo on the river floodplain, with lion and leopard inland. Its elephants are famously relaxed around canoes, so you can get remarkably close at water level. Seeing wildlife from a canoe feels very different from seeing it from a vehicle.
There are no giraffe in the Lower Zambezi, so if they are on your list, add South Luangwa or Kafue.
Walking Safari or Canoe Safari: Which Suits You?
This is the biggest difference between the two parks. South Luangwa is where Norman Carr led the first walking safaris in the 1950s, and it still has some of the most experienced walking guides in Africa. Morning walks of 3-4 hours, multi-day walking trails and fly camping are the main draw. Read our walking safari guide for what a day on foot looks like.
The Lower Zambezi is built around the river. Most camps include canoe trips through the side channels, boat cruises, catch-and-release tiger fishing, and game drives and walks inland. If you like variety and being on the water, it is hard to beat.
Both parks offer day and night game drives, so you will not miss out on either.
Which Park Is Cheaper?
South Luangwa is the easier park on a budget. Camps near Mfuwe Gate, such as Croc Valley and Flatdogs, cost from about $30-100 a night, and you can book game drives and walks separately. Luxury bushcamps and walking safari camps run $500-1,500 a night all-inclusive.
The Lower Zambezi is mostly mid-range to luxury, at about $300-1,500 a night all-inclusive. Budget travellers usually stay just outside the park, for example at Kiambi Safari Lodge ($50-150 a night), and add activities from there.
Park fees are the same in both, as both are Category A parks: $25 per person per day for international visitors, $30 if you self-drive, and $20 for residents and SADC nationals. They are usually included in all-inclusive rates. For more ways to save, see Zambia on a budget.

How Do You Get to Each Park?
South Luangwa
Fly from Lusaka to Mfuwe Airport (about 1 hour 20 minutes), then take a short road transfer to your camp. The road from Lusaka along the Great East Road is long, roughly 8-10 hours, so most international visitors fly.
Lower Zambezi
A light-aircraft charter from Lusaka to the Royal or Jeki airstrip takes about 45 minutes. By road it is roughly 5-6 hours via Chirundu, with the last section on dirt roads, so a 4x4 is essential. Some camps arrange road and boat transfers.
Flight and drive times are estimates as of October 2026. Schedules and road conditions change, so check with your airline or camp.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Each Park?
The dry season (May to October) is best for both. July to October is the sweet spot, when both parks are fully open and wildlife gathers at the rivers.
South Luangwa has the longer season, and some camps near Mfuwe stay open through the green season. Most Lower Zambezi camps close during the rains. Tiger fishing there peaks from September to November. Our best time to visit Zambia guide has a month-by-month breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is South Luangwa or Lower Zambezi better for a safari?
Neither is better overall; they are good at different things. South Luangwa is the better choice for walking safaris, night drives and leopard sightings, and it has more budget accommodation. Lower Zambezi is the better choice if you want canoe safaris, fishing and a mix of water and land activities, and it is closer to Lusaka for a short trip.
Can you visit South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi on the same trip?
Yes, and many travellers do. A common plan is 3-4 nights in each park, connected by flights through Lusaka or a light-aircraft charter. Because the two parks offer different activities (walking in South Luangwa, canoeing in the Lower Zambezi), they combine well rather than repeating each other.
Which park is cheaper, South Luangwa or Lower Zambezi?
South Luangwa is usually cheaper. It has budget camps near Mfuwe Gate from about $30-100 a night where you can book game drives separately, while most Lower Zambezi camps are mid-range to luxury all-inclusive lodges. Budget options for the Lower Zambezi are mostly just outside the park.
Which park is easier to reach from Lusaka?
The Lower Zambezi is closer: about 45 minutes by light aircraft or roughly 5-6 hours by road and 4x4. South Luangwa is usually reached by a scheduled flight from Lusaka to Mfuwe (about 1 hour 20 minutes), because the drive is long, at around 8-10 hours.
Can you go canoeing in South Luangwa?
Canoe safaris are a Lower Zambezi speciality. South Luangwa is focused on walking safaris and day and night game drives. If canoeing among elephants and hippos is a priority, choose the Lower Zambezi or add it to a South Luangwa trip.
When is the best time to visit both parks?
July to October is the best overlap. Both parks are fully open, the bush has dried out, and wildlife concentrates along the rivers. September and October are the hottest months but offer the most intense game viewing in both parks.
